Paul Mescal's character Junior and Saoirse Ronan's character Hen lead a modest life on a distant farm. When a mystery man named Terrance (Aaron Pierre) shows there with an offer that calls into question their connection and identity, their peaceful existence is upended. Hen's temporary companion will be a robot, while Junior will be shipped off to live on a spacecraft. Inspired by the same-titled novel by Iain Reid published in 2018, it's a psychological thriller with strong echoes of Black Mirror.

As these women's paths intersect, they become unexpectedly close and become a part of a close-knit expat community through all of their highs and lows and the lessons they ultimately learn about life.
